Liposuction is a safe and effective treatment when performed by a qualified professional.

Liposuction is a procedure in which excess fat is removed from the body in order to improve one’s contours. The treatment is often highly effective in areas such as the thighs, buttocks, hips, arms, abdomen, arms and back. It’s an ideal solution for individuals who struggle with stubborn deposits of fat even after successful weight loss.

But is the treatment safe? Read on to find out more about what the procedure involves and if it’s worth considering…

What does the procedure involve?

Dr Hanikeri only performs liposuction under general anaesthesia — this is a safer option than performing the treatment with a local anaesthetic. During the liposuction process, hollow tubes known as cannulas are inserted into the target areas through very small incisions. Fat is then removed through these incisions.

Although you won’t feel anything during the procedure itself, it is normal to experience some pain following the treatment. Besides pain, you may also experience some swelling, bruising and temporary numbness after liposuction. Dr Hanikeri will let you know how best to manage these side effects. A combination of medications, compression garments and rest generally helps to minimise discomfort.

Is it safe?

Liposuction is considered a safe treatment when performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon. It is important to note, however, that as with any surgery, liposuction is associated with a number of risks.

Some potential risks include complications with anaesthesia, infection, skin colour changes, scars and bumpy skin. If you have any questions or concerns about the risks and side effects of liposuction, Dr Hanikeri will be able to address them when you come in for a consultation.

Who is suited to liposuction?

One of the most important things to know about liposuction is that it is not a weight loss technique. Ideal candidates should be at a healthy and stable body weight. We also recommend that patients are in good overall health, have good skin elasticity and muscle tone, and don’t have a lot of excess skin.

Liposuction is not suitable for patients who are overweight or obese, or who have chronic health problems. We also do not recommend the treatment for individuals who smoke or have a history of conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, deep vein thrombosis, or seizures. Patients who take medications that increase the risk of bleeding are also not suited to liposuction.
