It is important to discuss your expectations with your surgeon before breast reduction surgery.

If you are struggling with chronic pain as a result of large breasts, you are likely to benefit from a breast reduction procedure. The surgery helps to achieve a more balanced body shape and can provide considerable relief from discomfort. If you are considering the surgery, read on to find out how to prepare for treatment and what you can expect once it is complete…

Why is breast reduction performed?

Breast reduction surgery is often a highly effective solution for women who have particularly large breasts and who experience discomfort as a result. The procedure can help alleviate back, neck and shoulder pain and other pain caused by the excessive weight of large breasts.

Many women with large breasts also struggle with rash and skin irritation under the breasts, along with discomfort and difficulty with exercise. These issues can be resolved by means of a breast reduction. The procedure also enhances the breasts’ overall appearance and can help achieve a more proportionate body shape, whilst lifting and tightening the breast as occurs with a breast lift procedure.

How do you prepare?

Before you undergo breast reduction surgery, your surgeon will thoroughly evaluate your general health, as well as your medical history. They will discuss any health concerns you have and confirm that you are suited to the procedure.

During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations with your surgeon. Your surgeon will let you know about the risks associated with surgery and provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision. Your surgeon will measure your breasts and take some photographs for your records.

In preparation for surgery, your surgeon may ask that you undergo some laboratory tests, as well as a baseline mammogram. If you smoke, you will need to stop for a recommended period of time before surgery. Your surgeon will also let you know which medications to avoid before surgery.

Before you have breast reduction surgery, it is a good idea to arrange for someone to drive you home from the hospital when your procedure is complete. You should also arrange for childcare if necessary as you will need some time to recover properly.

What can you expect after surgery?

Once your surgery is complete, your breasts will be dressed in gauze and tape and you will have drainage tubes coming out from under the breasts. Your surgeon will let you know what medications you should take to alleviate pain and prevent infection.

Your breasts are likely to feel tender for around a week following surgery, and you will experience some swelling and bruising during this time. You should wear a compression garment to minimise swelling and protect your breasts while they heal for the first few weeks.

You will need to avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks after surgery, and your surgeon will let you know when you can resume your usual workout regime. Driving will also not be advisable for the first two weeks after surgery.  You can expect some scarring after surgery, but this should fade over time.
