Dr Hanikeri offers a range of surgical procedures for the breasts, body and face.

Breast implants may offer customisable size and shape with immediate results, whereas breast fat grafting may provide a more subtle look and feel without introducing foreign materials into the body. Ultimately, the decision between the two options will depend on your personal needs and goals.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BREAST IMPLANTS AND BREAST FAT TRANSFER

The primary differences between breast implants and breast fat transfer are in the materials used, the incisions required, and the results achieved:

  • Materials: Breast implants are silicone gel devices, while breast fat transfer utilises the patient’s own body fat.
  • Incisions: Implant surgery requires a single larger incision on each side to insert the implants, whereas fat transfer requires multiple small incisions for liposuction and then injection of the fat.
  • Results: Breast implants offer a more predictable and long-lasting increase in breast size. Fat transfer can provide a more subtle look and feel, though some of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed by the body. The fat that successfully integrates into the breast should remain there permanently but is usually much less than the volume provided by even small implants.

WHAT DOES A BREAST IMPLANT PROCEDURE INVOLVE

Breast implant surgery, also known as breast augmentation, involves inserting implants under the breast tissue. During your consultation, Dr Hanikeri will discuss your goals and expectations, help you choose the appropriate implant size and type, and provide detailed information about the procedure, enabling you to make an informed decision.

The surgery is performed in a hospital environment under General anaesthesia and, in most cases, is performed as a day stay. An incision is typically made under the breast (inframammary incision). This approach enables precise creation of the implant pocket and careful control of the implant’s position within it.

WHAT DOES A BREAST FAT TRANSFER PROCEDURE INVOLVE

Breast fat transfer surgery, also known as autologous fat grafting or lipofilling, involves harvesting fat from one part of your body and injecting it into your breast tissues. Like breast implant surgery, the process begins with a consultation to discuss your goals and expectations. Dr Hanikeri will also assess whether you have sufficient donor fat for the procedure.

At the time of surgery, which is also performed in a hospital under General Anaesthetic, Dr Hanikeri will perform liposuction to remove fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. This fat is then carefully processed and purified for injection. The refined fat is injected into the breasts through small, strategically placed incisions, and Dr Hanikeri will sculpt the breasts to achieve the desired size and shape. After the fat transfer is complete, the incisions are closed.

BREAST IMPLANTS: TAILORED SIZE AND FIRMNESS

Breast augmentation with implants offers a structured approach, providing a wide range of sizes and firmness options. Most modern breast implants contain cohesive silicone gel designed to look and feel like natural breasts. One key advantage of implants over fat grafting is the predictability of size outcomes, allowing you to select the exact specifications that best suit your body and aesthetic goals.

BREAST FAT GRAFTING: SUBTLE CONTOUR AND FEEL

Conversely, breast fat grafting provides a more subtle option by using your own body fat, ensuring complete biocompatibility. This procedure involves liposuction from a donor area, which not only slims the donor site but also enhances the breasts. This natural approach is ideal for those seeking a modest augmentation (From half to one cup size, though larger volumes can be obtained with repeated procedures) and offers the additional benefit of body contouring through fat removal.

LONGEVITY AND MAINTENANCE OF BREAST IMPLANTS

Although durable, breast implants are not permanent and typically last 10-15 years. Over time, they may require replacement or revision due to changes in breast shape, implant rupture, or a desire for a different size or type. Regular follow-ups with your surgeon are crucial to monitor the condition of your implants and ensure they continue to meet your expectations. Dr Hanikeri recommends annual ultrasound scans be performed from the eight-year mark to monitor the integrity of the implants.

LONGEVITY AND MAINTENANCE OF BREAST FAT GRAFTING

Breast fat grafting provides a different approach to longevity. Using your own fat typically results in more permanent outcomes. However, it is important to note that the body naturally reabsorbs some of the transferred fat over time, which may alter the results. In these instances, touch-up procedures can help maintain the desired breast shape and size. The transferred breast fat will behave like all other fat in your body. If you gain weight, your breasts may become larger, and if you lose weight, you may lose volume in your breasts.

HOW CAN YOU DECIDE IF IMPLANTS OR A FAT TRANSFER IS BEST FOR YOU?

  • If you want more predictable results: breast implants.
  • Want a small increase in breast size with natural material: breast fat transfer.
  • For the most dramatic effect: breast implants.
  • If you have a low tolerance for scars: breast fat transfer.
  • If you are very lean: breast implants.

Choosing between breast implants and fat transfer is a personal decision based on your individual needs and preferences. Each option has its own distinct advantages. Remember, you can also opt for a combined approach, using a small-volume implant for structural support and fat grafting over the implant for a smoother shape and cleavage.

The choice between them should align with your unique preferences, body type, and aesthetic goals. Ultimately, a consultation is essential to make an informed decision.
